A 13-member gang, allegedly involved in making fake credit cards, was busted by the city police. They arrested the gangsters and seized Rs 20 lakh and fake credit cards from them. The gang had reportedly defrauded seeveral persons in Tamilnadu, Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka and Kerala.

The police were set on the trail of the gang based on a complaint from Anantharaman of Anna Nagar that Rs 53,000 had been withdrawn from the credit card of his wife.
Interrogations revealed that when Anantharaman’s wife had gone to a petrol bunk, an employee allegedly took note of the details of the credit card and disclosed the same to his friends Gowthaman, Elangovan and Selvin.
The gang had made fake credit cards using the details and purchased washing machines and AC machines. Following eight similar complaints, the case was transferred to Central Crime Branch police.
The gang had perpetuated the crime in connivance with a few similar ‘operatives’ Vinothkumar and Nirmal from Kerala, Arun Kumar, Ezhilarasan and Deenadayalan of Sri Lanka and Arunraj of Trichy.
Interrogations revealed that another three persons were part of the whole operations. They were identified as Manoj Kumar, Sabarisan and Udayakumar of Pallikaranai.
They had asked Justin, the employee of the bunk to regularly steal the details of credit cards. The gang confessed that they cloned fake credit cards in connivance with a a few Chinese.
They also told the police that one Zatti from Sri Lanka was the mastermind behind the scam The gang had been involved in the scam for more than five years.
Meanwhile a press release from the Commissionerate said that necessary steps had been taken to ensure the idole immersion event passed off without any hitch.
The release said that as of now there was no threat perception to the event, which will happen on 18 and 19 September.
He said that the organisers have been issued a slew of guidelines, including the need for using eco-friendly material in making the idols and to ensure the smooth conduct of the procession. As many as 734 idols are placed in city.
‘A 9000-strong police force will be posted for security on the days of immersion of idols which should be done only in five notified places in and around Chennai.
According to the guidelines, the idols should not exceed 11 feet in height and should be made of eco-friendly material and only such idols will be allowed to be immersed in the sea. The idols should be immersed 500 metres inside the sea, it added.
