India’s tennis star Sania Mirza continued her recent good form when she shocked World No. 64 Ayumi Morita of Japan 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the Pattaya Open championship on Tuesday, according to information received here.
The 25-year-old Sania, who played a key role last week to help India come back into the Group I of the Fed Cup championship, is currently ranked world No. 111 in women’s singles and World No. 7 in women’s doubles.
It was a day of mixed emotion for the Mirza family as Sania's husband and former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik was dropped from the Pakistan one-day squad today.
Sania will now face World No. 16 and second seed Dominika Cibulkova in the next round.
