ORLANDO, US--Unveiled at the BlackBerry World conference, the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device will not be seen on store shelves. Instead, it’s meant only for the hands of developers to test-drive apps.
As a result, RIM is being tight-lipped on much of the device's specs, including the processor speed, camera megapixel count and display type. The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha welcome screen.

So far, we know that it's a 4.2-inch 1,280 x 768-pixel (WXGA) display, but not the type of screen or pixel layout. That brings the device's pixel density to 355 ppi, which beats the iPhone's 326 ppi Retina Display hands down.
The Dev Alpha is able to hold its own next to the Galaxy S II's Super AMOLED Plus screen and the iPhone's Retina Display.

In fact, checking the prototype's software version shows "PlayBook OS 10". The Dev Alpha is running on "BlackBerry PlayBook OS 10". Weird huh?
(Credit: Jacqueline Seng/CNET Asia) Since BB 10 is going to be QNX-based, there are going to be some similarities between the PlayBook OS 2.0 and the next-generation operating system. However, Smith adds that what is seen on the Dev Alpha now is not reflective of the final UI, which will actually look more like Live Tiles on Windows Phone.
This being a prototype device, the software was buggy at times, and didn't always detect our fingers. Also, there are no preinstalled apps except the camera and browser.
We didn't get to test the amazing time warp function, where you can scroll a few frames forward or backward to get the best shot. All images that were shot via the front- and rear-facing cameras also simply disappeared off the screen.
With BB OS 10, you're supposed to be getting the new onscreen keyboard. This feature wasn't available on the device we tested, but our CNET US counterpart Brian Bennett did try it, and had good things to say about it:
At first glance it doesn't look like much, just a standard layout with not many options for dual-functions. When you start typing, though--that's when the magic happens. Each letter you tap will cause the phone to display suggested words above the letter it thinks you're most likely to type next. I tried my hand at banging out a few messages and I often found myself staring right at the word sitting on the tip of my tongue. It's honestly an uncanny feeling, almost as if the device was reading my mind.
In addition, there's the ability to swipe upwards on predicted words to add them to the message body. The new keyboard is supposed to help you to input text more efficiently, as well as use a modelling algorithm that will tailor itself to your typing habits over time. It's similar to what's already on the PlayBook, only more intuitive to use. The browser app had a normal keyboard, not the new virtual keyboard with swiping gestures.

The Dev Alpha packs some 16GB of non-expandable onboard storage and 1GB of RAM, as well as a non-removable battery. Connectivity-wise, there's the usual suite of options like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Internet tethering and near-field communications (NFC). Unfortunately, there isn't a SIM card slot.
If RIM's final BB 10 devices look as good as the Dev Alpha--and actually runs BB 10 OS smoothly--we feel pretty upbeat about its chances in the market. Let's just hope it doesn't follow the footsteps of the PlayBook, which received rave reviews when it was announced, but failed to perform after it was released.

Samsung Intercept users with Sprint will want to listen up — you have a new update available and it has just begun rolling out. And yes, it includes what many have likely been waiting for —Android 2.2 Froyo. The news comes by way of the Sprint user forums and specifically points out that this is ROLLING out.
In other words, it may take a few days before you see the update arrive. That said, you can either sit back and wait for the update notification to arrive on your phone or you can try and be pro-active. If you choose to take the pro-active route, grab your phone and head to Menu -> Settings -> About phoneSystem Updates -> Update Android and keep your fingers crossed.
As for the update itself, according to the forumposting from Sprint, the Software Version is S:M910.05.S.DL05 and the build version is Froyo.DL05. But aside from the boring software and build version numbers — you are getting Froyo. Plus, there are a few other goodies that are coming along with.
The other changes include fixes for Sprint Navigation as well as dropped calls after unacknowledged call and force close messages when opening up contacts. And while the Sprint Navigation is nice to see, I cannot help but think how many users simply use Google. Of course, that is not to say Sprint Navigation is bad and after all it is free so having two available options is probably better than one.
With that, so far it looks like this process is just barely underway, or at least that is how it looks based on the fact that the Sprint posting has very few messages and at this time we see no reports of success or failure — just a few people wondering where the update is. And given that, let us remind you once again, this is rolling out and will take some time before it gets out to everyone.

Finally, Android Froyo laden LG Optimus One has been launched in India - Officially. Priced at Rs. 13,500, the new Optimus One will compete with current Android models in the Indian market. Last week, we reported that over one million Optimus One handsets were sold worldwide in about 40 days. Obviously, Indians would like to get their hands on a Google Android phone running Froyo 2.2 update in mid-range price segment. LG also promises to bring Optimus 7 that runs Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system.
LG Optimus One has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen supporting 320x480 pixel resolution. Under the hood, Optimus One has 600MHz microprocessor and 419MB RAM which are good enough to run Android Froyo 2.2 update on them. For the social network frenzy youths, the phone offers Social Network integration along with other useful applications like Google Maps and Digital Compass since it has GPS with A-GPS support.
Expect mediocre quality photos with the 3.15 megapixel camera that can record VGA video at 18 frames per second. Users can browse faster web using Wi-Fi, thanks to the 802.11 b/g standards supporting chip and enjoy the Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP. Today there is some new news regarding the Asus Eee Tablet. The Eee Tablet was supposed to be launched by now, the devices was supposed to be selling back in September. However, Asus has decided to hold off on releasing the 8-inch tablet. Reports today claim Asus has pushed back the release until Q1 of 2011 because they are not comfortable with the name of the device.
If you can remember the “Eee Tablet” features a non-color touchscreen with 2,450 dpi sensitivity. The tablet will be used mostly as an e-reader/notepad/sketchbook. The new names the source say’s Asus is favoring are Digital Note and Eee Note. There is no word on how much the Asus touch tablet will cost.
London: If multi-function phones leave you dazed, here's the answer -- a mobile phone that just makes calls and does nothing else has been developed. No MP3, no apps and no, not even texts can be operated on it.
"John's Phone" neither checks facebook nor follows Twitter feeds. It, however, has a battery life of three weeks and has a manual just one page long, the Sun reported Tuesday.

Nokia today began shipping its new C7 smartphone around the world.
The follow-up to the recently launched N8 smartphone, the C7 is Nokia's second phone powered by its new Symbian 3 mobile operating system.
The 3.5-inch glass touch-screen is an active-matrix OLED that offers 640x360 pixel resolution. The C7 offers an 8-megapixel camera that can shoot stills and high-definition video. Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity and 8GB of memory are part of the package as well.
But the real focus of the new phone is social networking.
The C7 can display multiple home screens to receive live updates from Facebook and Twitter and provide quick access to certain e-mail accounts, such as Ovi Mail, Yahoo Mail, and Windows Live Hotmail. You can customize the home screen to display different widgets, including news, weather, e-mail, and contacts. A locations widget can pinpoint your location, which you can then share with Facebook friends.
As with Nokia's other smartphones, C7 customers can tap into the company's Ovi Store to download apps. "Designed specifically with the style-conscious consumer in mind, the Nokia C7 also brings excellent social networking abilities, making it perfect for people who want to check in and stay up to date," Jo Harlow, head of smartphones at Nokia, said in a statement.
Nokia is running a contest to kick up interest in the phone. Following the C7's launch, the company will choose five of the most active users on its Nokia global Facebook page. Those five finalists will be provided with a C7 to put together a party using different social networks. The one who generates the greatest amount of coverage will win a C7 for themselves and 20 of their friends.
The C7 has a $466 price tag, though price and availability will vary by region and carrier.
NEW DELHI: Mobile handsets manufacturer Nokia Wednesday launched Nokia E5, its latest addition to the Nokia Eseries range, in the Indian market.
Priced at Rs12,699, the handset with Symbian technology combines business as well as personal networking solutions.
The model is perfect for managing busy schedules with a variety of productivity applications available in the Ovi Store.
"With features such as business and consumer email , chat, social networking, a 5-megapixel camera and long battery life, this phone will appeal to a large section of professionals who want a converged device to address their needs," said Vipul Sabharwal, director, Sales, Nokia India.
The handset will initially be available in two colours - Carbon Black and Chalk White.
Indian security agencies are not able to access Research in Motion's BlackBerry messenger services despite being granted access, the latest twist in a months-long saga that stems from India's concern over security issues. BlackBerry's Canadian maker RIM has said it does not have a key to offer to Indian security agencies that would help decode emails, India's telecoms ministry said in an internal note, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.
And even though sources from the interior ministry have told Reuters that the government does have access to BlackBerry messenger services, the telecoms ministry said in its note that it is testing a solution offered by RIM. It said it was not currently able to intercept or monitor chat communication made using messenger services. India, which along with several other countries has expressed concerns that BlackBerry services could be used to stir political or social instability, had threatened BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion with a ban if it were denied access to data. The United Arab Emirates has threatened to suspend BlackBerry Messenger, email and web browser services from October 11 unless the government gets access to encrypted messages. A top Abu Dhabi official said on Sunday they were "very optimistic" about reaching an agreement with RIM before the deadline. RIM won a 60-day reprieve at the end of August after offering India solution to monitor BlackBerry data, a claim yet to be confirmed by the Canadian firm. India wanted access for its security agencies to communication both in BlackBerry Messenger and secure corporate email services, and government officials have said the solution provided so far is limited to the Messenger service. "Talks are underway," with RIM, an interior ministry source said on Friday, when asked about access to corporate email services. Satchit Gayakwad, RIM's spokesman in India, also said his firm's talks with the Indian government were on, but declined give further details, citing confidentiality of such talks. Last week a government source told Reuters that India and RIM had hit technical glitches in their talks on access to corporate email, but access to the messenger services was satisfactory. As part of its broader electronic security crackdown, the Indian government also plans to send notices to Google and Skype to set up servers in India and allow full monitoring of communication, government officials have said.

Samsung has announced the launch of three new Dual SIM phones in India. The new devices include the Samsung Star Duos GT-B7722, the Guru Dual 25 and Guru Dual 26.
Let's take a look at these devices in detail.
We start with the GT-B7722 Duos. This handset is touted to be the first 3G + 2G Dual-Standby touchscreen phone on the planet! This GSM + GSM handset features support for Active Sync, Microsoft Office files and even has a PDF reader - making it a decent entry level office phone. It also has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB. It also has 250MB of internal memory. It is priced at Rs. 12,300.
Next, we have the Samsung Guru Dual 25 (GT- E1225) and Samsung Guru Dual 26 (GT -E 1252). These are entry level dual SIM phones designed to compete with the players in the low cost field dominated by the likes of Micromax, G'Five and so on. The Dual 25 is the cheaper of the two and boasts of features like stereo FM, Torch, support for nine regional languages and a 1000 contacts phonebook. Only one SIM can be active at a time on the Guru Dual 25. It has a smallish 1.8-inch display and has an 800mAH battery. It also has a 3.5 mm jack for audio.
Its elder brother Guru Dual 26 comes with a larger 2-inch display and also has a larger battery - rated at 1000mAH.

Samsung has also promised that it would introduce new dual SIM handsets in the country in the months to come. Samsung currently sells 10 dual SIM models in India.
Bharti Airtel on Wednesday said it had been granted a licence by the Reserve Bank of India that would enable the firm to start financial services on mobile phones.
“Bharti Airtel was granted the licence to use the semi closed wallet by the RBI in this quarter. This allows a customer to exchange physical cash for virtual money which can be stored on mobile phone to pay for goods/services for transaction of value less than Rs.5,000,'' Bharti Airtel said in a statement.
Semi closed wallets are prepaid payment instruments, redeemable at specific outlets, with whom the operator ties up. However, instruments do not permit cash withdrawal or redemption by the holder, Bharti statement said.
User-friendly
The licence would help Bharti Airtel create mobile payments as a category in the country and allow the company to offer a secure and user-friendly medium to customers for making payments. The company, however, did not specify the exact time frame for the launch of these services.
“At present, we are evaluating various options that this license provides to find out how best we can create a value proposition for Airtel customers... It is difficult to give an exact timeline for the launch at this stage,” the statement added.
