Mumbai man spends 16 hours in jail for killing dog

Mumbai:  A man in Mumbai had to spend 16 hours in a police lock-up after he killed a dog on Sunday afternoon.

Bajinath Nishad claimed he killed the dog in self-defence after the dog bit him on his right ankle. He said that he had to be treated for the dog bite at Bhabha Hospital, Bandra.

The Santacruz police detained Nishad after an NGO approached the police and ensured that he was put behind bars. He was released around 6 pm yesterday evening.

Nishad said that the incident took place when he was walking past the dog near his residence in Juhu Koliwada on Sunday afternoon.

"The dog bit me on my right leg. He kept pouncing on me even after he bit me," said Nishad.

"I got furious and retaliated by hitting the dog on the head. I then tied a lasso around the dog's neck and dragged it to a nearby garbage bin."

Hearing the news of the dog's demise, Manju Sadaram who used to feed the stray was grief stricken. Manju said, "I do not know why he killed the poor dog. He should have complained to BMC or the police."

However, when Nishad spoke to MiD DAY he said that he had no intention of killing the dog but had to in order to save his own life.

"I had warned Manju that her dog was dangerous and could bite someone but, she did not pay any heed to my warning."

Nishad's brother Ashok added that Manju was warned of the dog's aggressiveness in the past but she did not listen.

"The police locked my brother for 16 hours because he killed a dog in self defence. Manju feeds them and therefore the dog is always resting outside the lane. The dog has bitten many people in past but she does not listen."

The Santacruz police said that Manju and members from In defence of animals, an NGO working for the welfare of strays approached them at night.

Aban Mistry, who works for In defence of animals said that Nishad should not have killed the animal. She also alleged that the police was not cooperating in investigating the matter further.

Refuting claims of being uncooperative, Senior Inspector Madhukar Chaudhari, said, "The matter has not yet been registered. Both parties are compromising and we await their decision."
