Hyderabad
Nov. 10: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti on Tuesday launched an agitation against illegal occupation of assigned lands belonging to Dalits in Papannapet mandal in Medak district.
The party, however, called off its proposed 24-hour dharna in front of the Papannapet Tahsil office after the joint collector, Mr Ramshanker Naik, promised to conduct a survey within two or three days and initiate action against those holding the lands.
TRS leaders said that they would take up similar agitations against assigned lands in Bachupally in Ranga Reddy district and Narne estate, East city
Bhoodan lands in Nalgonda district and other places in Telangana region soon.
The TRS MLA, Mr Harish Rao, alleged that 1,338 acres of assigned lands belonging to Dalits were under the illegal occupation of Andhra settlers in Laxminagar.
“We will await the survey but if no action is taken, we will re-launch the agitation and see that the Dalits get back the lands,” he said.
The TRS activists also manhandled the office staff when they tried to take away the land records from
the office in two autorickshaws. Police then intervened and sorted out the issue.
The situation turned volatile as the Telugu Desam MLA, Mr Hanumantha Rao, arrived at the spot along with his supporters and criticised the TRS chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, for creating unrest for narrow ends.
“Mr Chandrasekhar Rao is whipping up regionalism to recover lost ground,” he said.
As a mark of protest against the TRS dharna, local Andhra settlers also downed their shutters.
