There were celebrations all over in Hasrour, the native village of 25-year-old Vijay Kumar who won a gold medal in the 25 metre rapid fire pistol (pairs) at Commonwealth Games on Thursday. The village is in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh.
Vijay has already won 56 gold medals in national competitions and 13 at various international events. He has 26 international medals (13 gold, seven silver and six bronze) and 76 national medals in total. He won the World Cup in 25 m rapid fire pistol shooting last year.
On Thursday, the duo of Vijay and Gurpreet Singh scored 587 out of 600 and 575 out of 600, respectively. Vijay is serving as a subedar in the Indian Army at Mau. Shortly after his success, Vijay spoke to The Indian Express over telephone and said: “I have another event scheduled for Friday and two more after that. I will give it my best shot and try to win more medals.” Vijay had won two gold in the last Commonwealth Games. He said he hoped to improve his tally this year.
