Curfew imposed to scuttle separatist march in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Curfew was imposed across Kashmir Valley on Tuesday to scuttle a protest march in Srinagar called by separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani . Though the normal life was disrupted in the Valley, yet students were allowed to appear for secondary school board exams without hindrance. Geelani, who has been spearheading the Quit Kashmir campaign for the last four months, has appealed people to march from different parts of the city to Hyderpora area of Srinagar on Tuesday.

A large number of security force personnel have been deployed across the city, officials said, adding curfew was strictly being implemented in civil lines areas of the city, especially areas adjoining Hyderpora. “Curfew has been imposed in Srinagar city and other major towns of the Valley in order to prevent violence by miscreants who in the name of the so-called peaceful protests have been inciting the youth to take to violence," said a senior policeman here.

“Instructions have, however, been given to the security forces to allow candidates appearing for the secondary school board exams and supervising staff without any hindrance throughout the Valley,” the policeman said.

“The roll number slips of the candidates and the identity cards of the supervisory staff shall be treated as curfew passes.”

Shops, educational institutions, public and private transport, banks and post offices remained closed in Srinagar city and the entire city wore a deserted look as security forces deployed on the ground ensured there was no violation of preventive orders. “Ironically, the same city which bears a total deserted look on Tuesday had throbbed with activity Monday. I was caught in a traffic jam at the radio station crossing and remained stuck for more than two hours in the evening,” said a television journalist .

"Today everything looks so deserted. This is the paradox of Kashmir which needs to be understood before anybody talks of probable solutions to end the impasse here," said Sheikh Farooq, a television news reporter here.

As many as 109 people have lost their lives in the last four months of unrest in the Kashmir Valley.
