Arrested at 6 am on Monday on charges of abetting the suicide of 13-year-old student Rouvanjit Rawla, the principal of the prestigious La Martiniere School, Sunirmal Chakravarti, and three other teachers were granted bail by a Kolkata court in the afternoon.
The court granted them bail because the sections they were charged in were bailable. The court slapped a fine of Rs 500 on each and also admitted the chargesheet against the four.
Principal Sunirmal Chakravarti and head of middle school L G Garnian, teachers Partho Dutta and David Raun were arrested this morning, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Damayanti Sen said.
The Class VIII student had killed himself on February 12, four days after being being caned by the principal. He was caned along with two other boys for playing truant, the principal had said.
After the arrests, Rouvanjit's father Ajay Rawla said from Singapore: “I am thankful the issue has not been swept under the carpet. There is always a possibility that something like this will recur in this school.”
