And there are fears that Ponting may have hurt himself badly enough to put his remaining participation in the Ashes series in doubt.
The injury happened when he parried a catch from second slip to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, dismissing England batsman Jonathan Trott late on day three of the third Test in Perth.
His team-mate Peter Siddle reported at a subsequent press conference that Ponting had gone to hospital to check on the injury, but added Australia hoped he would be "all right".
Siddle said: "It's clipped him on the little finger on the left hand, he's a little bit sore at the minute, but he's gone for a precautionary X-ray.
"He's feeling upbeat, he's feeling good, (he's) just wanting to get it checked out but from all reports it seems all right."
