World No 1: it’s every sportsperson’s dream and badminton ace Saina Nehwal is no different, but she believes playing and winning tournaments is as vital as climbing the ranking ladder. “Achieving the World No.1 is something I aim for and though it’s not impossible, for now, winning more titles is important,” says Saina. “Standing on the podium after a victory with the country’s flag has given me more pleasure and made me more proud than becoming a world number 5 or 2,” says the World No. 4.
The Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medalist says 2010 has been good to her, “I played five Super Series tournaments of which I won three. This is evidence of my dedication towards my game. I have focused on my goals and targets and I am glad with all that I have achieved so far.”
Saina, who lost the Asian Games quarterfinals in Guangzhou last month has matured, “I have learnt from senior players that sulking over a lost game does not help. It is disappointing initially but winning and losing is a part of every game. Obviously the ones you win make you feel over the moon but there are lessons to take back from the ones you lose,” says the Khel Ratna Awardee, adding, “One becomes more determined to come back stronger after a loss and make amends for the mistakes made in previous matches.”
“I always go to the court with a positive mind and grit to give my best and win the match. That attitude helps me a lot,” says the 20-year-old Hong Kong Super Series champion who plays for her fans as much as herself, “It is nice to see such a huge fan following in India and other countries as well. I consider it a responsibility to not disappoint my fans and play well.”
