Youth demands job at knifepoint

KANCHEEPURAM: Sithaiyan learnt it the hard way that the axiom ‘What money can’t buy, power can’ doesn’t stand true in all cases. This 24-year-old diploma holder in mechanical engineering from Kancheepuram is now cooling his heels in a remand home after he demanded employment at knifepoint at auto major Renault Nissan’s roster at Oragadam. As he tried to establish his bona fides with his prospective employer, he ended up injuring four policemen and a security personnel as he brandished his knife within the multinational company’s premises. The incident comes close on the heels of what a Tamil Nadu police force aspirant attempted on Monday. To fulfill the mandatory height requirement, Anand of Salem placed a wig atop a coconut shell that fit perfectly on his head. But, the method adopted by Sithaiyan gives a new meaning to the concept of direct employment.Kancheepuram SP Prem Anand Sinha and along with DIG Ramasubramani told Express that the youth had applied for a job in the company a couple of times and as no call for an interview had come, he, in his wisdom, chose to personally confront the woman receptionist and threatened her at knifepoint. The receptionist alerted the higher officers, who in turn informed the Oragadam police who rushed to the company within a few minutes. The Oragadam police station is just a kilometre away from the company.Oragadam Inspector Murugu Subramanian, a constable attached to CB-CID, two head constables, and a security personnel tried to overpower the unconventional job seeker, but all of them suffered injuries on their forearms. Sinha said Sithaiyan was endowed with a stable mind, but he was highly “desperate.” Knowingly or unknowingly, Sithaiyan demonstrated his valour to brighten his employment prospects, just on the eve of Chief minister and Deputy Chief Minister’s visit to a private company at Oragadam on Wednesday. The young man is now lodged at the Oragadam remand home. All injured were treated at the company’s clinic.
