The flood situation in Kanyakumari district was grim on Wednesday.
Surplus water from Petchipaarai and Perunchaani dams was discharged. Road traffic via Ozhuginaserry was stopped completely in the evening as flood water was flowing over the road and buses to Tirunelveli were diverted via Anjugramam.
Since the Suchindram tank on the Nagercoil – Anjugramam stretch was swelling sharply, traffic on this road was also under threat. “If the situation worsened, we'll be forced to stop traffic on this stretch too,” said a police officer.
Almost all villages in the Vilavancode taluk were flooded as the Tamirabharani in Kuzhithurai, the Valliyaaru and the Paraliyaaru were flowing violently, as surplus water from the reservoirs was released.
One person at Muttapathi near Kanyakumari was electrocuted on Wednesday.
Collector Rajendra Ratnoo said that four Coast Guard personnel with a boat from Vizhinjam in Kerala had reached Nagercoil for rescue operation.
Six more personnel from Kochi with boats and other rescue gears reached the flood-affected areas.
The Collector along with Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan visited flood-hit areas especially Ezhudesam where 500 persons were evacuated.
Eighteen temporary shelters were kept ready to accommodate the affected people.
While a helicopter from INS Kattabomman from Tirunelveli district would be pressed into service, another copter from Indian Air Force based in Coimbatore would be kept ready.
