Talking to mediapersons the Minister said the Centre's decision vindicated the view that more scientific study needed to be conducted before allowing the genetically-modifid vegetable crop, considered to be more resistant to pests in view of health concerns.
After a a series of public consultations in seven cities across the country, Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh today announced the decision.
A number of state governments, including Congress-ruled Andhra Pradesh had spoken against introduction of BT Brinjal, it may be noted.
