New Delhi, Feb 10 : Thousands of demonstrators led by Janata Dal(United) President Sharad Yadav today courted arrest to protest against the price rise of essential commodities.
The demonstrators shouted slogans and courted arrest against the Centre's failure to contain inflation.
Addressing the demonstration, Mr Yadav said the Centre was complaining that state governments were not cooperating in checking the price rise, while all the powers to control the prices were vested with the Central Government.
''Central Government has the power to procure commodities like sugar, paddy and wheat through Food Corporation of India(FCI).
It also controls the prices of petroleum prices which play a crucial role in controlling inflation while the states have none of these powers,'' Mr Yadav said.
He charged Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in being more interested in cricket tournament IPL than the concerns of millions of people suffering from rising prices.
Mr Yadav said the JD(U) would take up the issue of the price rise during the Budget Session of Parliament.
Among those who courted arrest were party leaders Javed Raza, Prabhat Ranjan, Shivraj Singh, Party MPs and workers.
