Sheridan Smith has been named best actress in a musical for her role in the West End hit Legally Blonde.
The show won four prizes in total at the Whatsonstage.com awards, which are chosen by the theatre-going public. The other three were for best new musical, best choreography and best supporting actress for Jill Halfpenny.
Based on the Hollywood film, Legally Blonde has been a box office success since it opened last year, thanks in large part to Smith’s performance as the irrepressible Elle Woods. The 29-year-old actress also hosted last night's awards ceremony.
Other winners included Ramin Karimloo, who won best actor in a musical for his role as the Phantom in Love Never Dies. The 25th anniversary concert of Les Misérables at London’s O2 arena won theatre event of the year and best ensemble performance, while the Les Mis production at the Barbican won best musical revival.
