VIZIANAGARAM: Two persons were seriously injured when an explosion ripped through the rural police station building here on Monday evening. Sources said explosive material kept in the store room caused the blast.
The walls of the store room were completely damaged in the incident. The severely injured persons -- T Venkata Appa Rao and T Subba Rao -- were accused in different cases and were kept in the store room for interrogation.
Sources said some workers were painting the walls of the store room when the explosion occurred. Appa Rao's condition is critical as he suffered 80 per cent burns, while Subba Rao had 40 per cent burns on his body.
Fire services officials confirmed that explosive material had caused the blast but could not specify the contents of the explosive material.
When contacted, district SP Naveen Gulati said the blast was caused by a short-circuit in the room. According to sources, the blast sound was heard even half a km from the PS, which is located on a busy road in the town. Immediately after the blast, a thick plume of smoke covered the entire area.
Employees of the nearby offices of registrar, tehsildar and rythu bazar rushed out in panic and ran helter-skelter after the blast. "Police personnel keep files and other materials in the store room, besides ammunition. The ammunition might have resulted in the blast," sources said.
