Motorists in Delhi got a respite from the Games Lane rule on Tuesday with the Delhi Traffic Police not enforcing it on Sardar Patel Marg. This road remains congested almost throughout the day. When the day began, traffic police were deployed there to direct vehicles on the non-dedicated lane.
But when the situation went out of control, motorists were allowed to enter dedicated lanes with no penalty.
“The congestion was more than normal on all the roads along the dedicated lanes. We did not enforce strict restrictions for the whole day on Sardar Patel Marg, as this is a two-lane road and a heavy traffic zone. Even then the traffic crawled,” said Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
He said the police fined 129 persons under Section 115 of Motor Vehicles Act and slapped notices to 43 vehicles for entering the dedicated lanes on Tuesday.
Traffic snarls on the city's roads due to enforcement of dedicated lanes continued to cause trouble for Delhiites, especially office goers and students. During the peak hour on Tuesday evening, the situation went out of control.
Heavy traffic jams were seen on key roads connecting various Games sites, prominently National Highway number 8, Panchsheel Marg, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Bhisham Pitamah Marg, Lodhi Road, NH-24, Bhairon Road, Ring Road and August Kranti Marg.
“At some places, we had to allow vehicles to enter the Games lane when there was no movement of Games-related traffic. Traffic went out of gear especially on the two lane stretches, where one lane was kept reserved,” said a senior Traffic policeman.
