Bowling Green’s defense continued its dominant start to the 2010 season and the Purples’ offense overcame another sloppy start to win 35-0 over Franklin-Simpson on Friday at El Donaldson Stadium.
The BG (3-0) scoreless streak now stands at 1:52.52 dating back to last season as the Purples have outscored their opponents in 2010 by a 153-0 margin.

“We just work hard and the coaches do good with all our schemes,” senior cornerback Devon Daniel said on the impressive start to the campaign. “We have a different scheme every week, we try to execute it and our prep offense does a good job helping us. We’ve been practicing for them all week. We’ve watched a whole lot of film. It was really easy. Well, it wasn’t easy, but we worked hard.”

The Wildcats (2-1) did have the most success of any team by far this year of moving the ball against BG, even reaching the Purples’ 4 at the start of the fourth quarter. But on fourth down, quarterback Max Bennett’s fade pass sailed out of bounds and FSHS never got as close again.

“We made a few mistakes offensively and they just gave us so many problems up front that we just really struggled up front,” FSHS coach Tim Schlosser said. “But they’re a great defensive line and they’re a good football team. We’ll regroup from this and move on.”

Bowling Green led 14-0 at the break, but came out in the second half with an offensive attack based on running the football and running out the clock.

Senior transfer Hunter Neveras led the way with 100 yards rushing on 16 carries and a score.

“We came out struggling and stuff at first, but then we started picking things up and it started working out,” Neveras, who played last season at Greenwood, said of the second half. “We just had to get the momentum going. (My team is) definitely starting to trust me more now that I’m starting to get more comfortable with the plays and everything.”

The Purples took the opening drive of the second half from their own 24 and marched to paydirt in nine plays with senior Tevin Anderson plunging in from 3 yards out to make it 21-0.

Franklin-Simpson went three-and-out to give BG the ball back at its own 34, and eight plays later Scooter Hollis rolled to his right from the Franklin-Simpson 12 and hit Will Kilgore at the goal line for a 28-0 advantage.

Freshman Devin Hayes ended the night with a 7-yard strike to Anderson with 5:40 remaining in the game, ending a 96-yard drive that took 6:16.

The teams played a scoreless first quarter before Hollis’ one-yard option keeper to the left made it 7-0 in the second.

Three minutes later, Neveras slipped in from 4 yards out to give BG a 14-0 lead.

The game was slowed by 21 combined penalties, eight of which were personal fouls. There was also one ejection.

“I mean, it’s a rivalry,” Daniel said. “Any rivalry’s going to have fights and what not. Chippiness is just another thing for us.”

Bowling Green will go for its fourth straight shutout next week when it travels to cross-town rival Warren East. Franklin-Simpson hosts Greenwood.
