Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has offered to resign. Chavan said this after his meeting with Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister AK Antony.
After the meeting, while speaking to the media, Ashok Chavan said, “I have offered to resign. I have given my resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi. I have given all the details to party high command. I have told her to see and it is up to her now. Investigations are on. CBI will investigate the matter. After the investigation it will be clear about the land ownership.”
On Friday Antony had briefed Sonia Gandhi on Friday saying prima facie the land allotted to the society belonged to the Army.
Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry has now admitted that the land belonged to the Army as of May 2010. The admission comes in response to an RTI application filed on the matter.
Sources said Sonia is not convinced by Chavan's defense and that even Prime Minister Manmohan SIngh could hold a meeting on Saturday after he returns from his foreign trip. CNN-IBN had accessed papers indicating Chavan's direct involvement in the scandal.
The Congress High Command appears to be upset with Chavan, whose mother-in-law and two other relatives are among the 103 members of the controversial Adarsh Housing Society project in Mumbai in which several politicians, former Defence Services chiefs and other influential people have been allotted flats. The land on which the 31-storey building in posh Colaba is built, was said to have been meant for Kargil war heroes and widows.
Highly placed sources said on Friday night that Chavan, who became chief minister a year ago, is likely to be asked to step down in the wake of the Adarsh Housing scam.
However, sources told CNN-IBN that Congress is in a dilemma because US President Barack Obama will visit India shortly and in that period it would be difficult to select a new chief minister who would succeed Chavan as Vilasrao Deshmukh and Sushil Kumar Shinde both are involved in the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
Ashok Chavan himself as revenue minister approved the project. Three of his relatives got flat in Aadarsh Housing Society. Vilasrao Deshmukh as the Chief Minister gave initial permissions to Adarsh society, while Sushil Kumar Shinde as Chief Minister gave final sanction to the project.
What's more Ashok Chavan’s revenue minister, Narayan Rane too is accused of having flats in Adarsh Society, a charge he denies. Rane also claims the land belongs to the government and not the Navy.
