With the paver block tiles laying work having been completed inside the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) premises, the temporarily closed main entrance near casualty ward would be thrown open in a few days, said Medical Superintendent S. M. Sivakumar here on Friday.
The work, taken up a few months ago, required closure of main gate on Panagal Road. It was taken up in two phases — at a cost of Rs. 33 lakh and at Rs. 50 lakh — from the Madurai West MLA Local Area Development Fund.
All health workers, staff nurses and doctors working in the GRH would be administered A1 (H1N1) vaccine free of cost. Though there had been no case of swine flu reported in this region, the vaccine was administered following a government directive. Beneficiaries under ‘Kalaignar Kaapeettu Thittam' were administered the vaccine free of cost. About 5,000 persons, including GRH staff, medical college students and doctors, had taken the vaccine.
Inspection
The GRH annexe building coming up near Anna bus stand at a cost of Rs. 28 crore would start functioning by January.
A nodal officer from New Delhi would inspect the facility on Saturday. “Almost 95 per cent of the work is over. On installation of state-of-the-art equipment, it will start functioning from January-end,” he added.
The new building, which has been accorded Level-2 trauma care facility, will have 300 beds, including a pay ward.
With Madurai being a referral centre for nearly nine districts, on an average, 90 to 100 cases of trauma-related injuries (head, orthopaedics and general surgeries) were brought every day to the GRH which had only 30 beds. The new building should not only offset the shortage but also facilitate better care for patients, he said.
