National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned loans to the tune of Rs.25 crore under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) XVI for Pudukottai district for implementation of various infrastructure projects such as renovation of irrigation tanks, construction of school buildings, bridges and carrying out improvements on rural roads.
Of the sanctioned amount, Rs. 3.32 crore has been earmarked for construction of an anicut across Mudiyanar to feed Athani tank in Aranthangi taluk and another across Vellar River in Thandalai to feed Mumbalai and Vadakadu Manamelkudi tanks in Manamelkudi taluk.
A sum of Rs. 6.74 crore will be spent for construction of additional classrooms and laboratories, purchase of laboratory equipment, and provision of drinking water in nine secondary schools.
Of the remaining amount, Rs. 7.89 crore will be spent for improving 70.80- km of rural roads and Rs. 6.06 crore for construction of five high-level bridges on Aranthangi- Mimisal and Pudukottai- Yembal highways.
R. Anand, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, Pudukottai, said that through implementation of these projects, 380 hectares of land could be brought under cultivation.
The nine schools would get 58 additional classrooms. The projects would be carried out by the line departments of the State Government, such as the District Rural Development Agency and Public Works Department.
The projects would be completed by the end of 2013, he said.
