A color screen version and more titles on the anvilWink, India's very own eBook reader which we previewed back in August, is set to receive a little cousin in the form of a stripped down (read: Cheaper) version.
The original Wink, which around Rs. 12,000, sort of puts in a bracket that is beyond the reach of many. Most people would not consider investing that kind of money on a "mere" eBook reader. This seems to be the reason why the makers of the device are working on a cheaper version that they intend to sell for around Rs. 6,000. They also have plans to release another version that would sell for around Rs. 8,000.
The new version is expected to be launched in the next few months. While Wink is available in a 6-inch display now, the cheaper versions could measure around 5-inches (the screen size). The rest of the features would be similar to the existing Wink. At the moment, Wink offers it readers over 200,000 titles from over 15 languages to choose from. Wink users also get a 25 percent discount on most eBooks apart from an offer that they can avail to get 50 eBooks free as of now. The company plans to increase these types of subsidies further and make the cost of ownership of the Wink as minimal as possible.
Wink has tie ups with a large group of Indian as well as international publishers and is looking towards doubling its collection in the span of the next few months. Wink would also get access to some of the mostly widely read newspapers in the country in an eBook format as well. A color screen variant too is in the pipeline.
The Wink is currently available through Croma, Reliance, Crossword and Landmark outlets in the country.
