Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday recommended to the Governor the promulgation of an Ordinance for establishment of a fisheries university in the State. The University is proposed to be set up with its headquarters at Panangad in Ernakulam district.
The Cabinet also recommended the issue an Ordinance to form a welfare fund for artists and technicians working in fields of arts, culture and literature in the State. Briefing the media, Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan said the Fund would cover artists and technicians working for films, television and cable and DTH services.
The Cabinet had sanctioned construction of 30 hanging bridges to replace ferries used by school children. The State-owned Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company would undertake the construction of the bridges aimed at ensuring the safety of the pupils.
The Chief Minister announced that a company-Kerala Tourism Trade Promotion Organisation, would be formed under the Tourism Department for organising various programmes for tourism promotion such as the holding of Grand Kerala Shopping Festival.
The Cabinet had also decided to present Rs. 10 lakh each to Keralites who had won gold medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Each of the sport persons who had won silver and gold medals would get Rs. 7.5 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh respectively. Rs. 1 lakh each would be presented to the coaches. Further, the Cabinet had approved establishment of eight new fire stations and sanctioned the necessary posts.
