Two injured as police open fire in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Two persons were injured here on Thursday evening, one of them critically, as security forces opened fire to disperse protesters who hurled stones at them defying restrictions imposed in parts of the Old City. A group of youths started throwing stones at CRPF personnel at Zaldagar near Habba Kadal while the troops were withdrawing from the area after completing law and order duties, official sources said.
The personnel first used batons to chase the protesters away. As the number of stone-throwers kept swelling, they used the pellet gun, the sources said.
The injured are Reyaz Ahmad Badyari, who was hit in the abdomen, and Sajid Rashid, who was injured in both the legs. The condition of Ahmad was said to be critical.
Curfew in force in Anantnag
Curfew remained in force for the fourth day in Anantnag of south Kashmir. “Curfew has not been lifted in Anantnag, as there are apprehensions of violent protests,” a senior police officer said.
The death of a boy in police firing on August 30 sparked protests in the town, prompting the authorities to impose curfew there.
Restrictions were imposed in many parts of Srinagar to prevent the separatist elements from holding any demonstration. — PTI
